How does AI website builder pricing work?

The short answer
Most AI website builders let you start free, then charge a monthly subscription, usually cheaper per month if you pay a year upfront. The plan sets which features you get. On top, budget for your domain, business email, booking or shop fees, paid apps and sometimes AI credits. Always check the renewal price, not just the first-year offer.

AI website builder pricing looks simple on the pricing page: a few plans, a monthly figure, a big discount badge. The real cost depends on which features you need, how you pay and what happens at renewal. Here's how to work out what you'll actually spend.
How do AI website builders charge?
Almost all use a subscription. You can usually start for free. As of October 2026, Wix lets you start building with AI for free with no card needed, Squarespace offers a free trial with no card, and Framer has a free plan that includes some AI credits. You pay once you want to publish properly on your own domain or need more features.
Paid plans are tiered. Cheaper tiers cover a basic site. Higher tiers add things like online payments, bookings, more storage, more AI usage or removal of transaction fees.
What costs sit on top of the plan?
| Cost | What to check |
|---|---|
| Domain name | Some plans include one free for the first year, then it renews at the normal rate |
| Business email | Can be a separate add-on, charged per mailbox |
| AI credits or usage limits | Some builders cap AI generations or edits by plan |
| Booking or shop features | May need a higher plan, plus payment processing fees per transaction |
| Apps and plugins | Third-party add-ons can carry their own monthly fees |
| Premium templates | Most are free, some aren't |
| Your time | Writing content and keeping it current is the biggest hidden cost |
How do I spot the real price?
- Find the renewal price. Introductory offers often apply only to the first term.
- Check the billing term. A low monthly price may require paying for 12 or 24 months upfront.
- List the features you need now and in a year, and find the cheapest plan that has all of them.
- Add the extras from the table above.
- Work out the total for two years, which is a fairer comparison than the first month.
For consumers, the CMA's guidance on the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 says traders must show the total price including compulsory charges. For a contract with a minimum term, they must show either the total for the whole contract or the monthly price along with how many months you'll pay it. If you buy as a business, some consumer protections may not apply, so read the terms.
Is an AI builder cheaper than WordPress or a designer?
Upfront, almost always. Over several years it depends. WordPress software is free, so you pay for hosting, a domain and any premium themes or plugins, but you take on updates yourself. A designer costs more at the start but may save you time. Frequently asked questions
Is a free AI website builder plan enough for a business?
Rarely. Free plans usually use the builder's own web address instead of your domain, and often limit features. Framer's free plan, for example, includes a Framer domain and needs a paid plan to connect your own.
Should I pay monthly or annually?
Monthly while you're testing, annually once you're sure. Annual billing usually costs less per month but locks you in for longer, and introductory discounts often apply only to the first term.
Do I pay VAT on website builder subscriptions?
Prices shown to UK consumers must include VAT and other compulsory charges. Some builders show business prices excluding VAT, so check which you're looking at before comparing.
