AI website builder vs WordPress - which should I use?

The short answer
An AI website builder is faster and simpler. You get a polished draft in an hour, and the platform handles hosting, security and updates. WordPress takes longer to set up and needs regular updates, but you own the site outright, can move it to any host and can add almost any feature. For a long-term business site, we prefer WordPress.

AI website builders sell speed: describe your business, get a website. WordPress sells freedom: it's free, open-source software that runs on almost any host and does almost anything. Which matters more depends on whether you want a website this week or a website you'll still be happy with in five years.
How do they compare?
| AI website builder | WordPress | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to a first draft | Minutes | Hours to days, unless you use AI page tools |
| Hosting | Included, on the builder's platform | You choose any host |
| Updates and security | Handled by the platform | Your job, or your host's if managed |
| Features | What the platform offers | Over 75,000 free plugins on WordPress.org |
| Design freedom | Within the builder's templates | Almost unlimited, with themes and page builders |
| Ownership | Your content, their platform | You own the software and site files |
| Moving later | Often not possible without a rebuild | Full export, move to any host |
| Running cost | Monthly subscription | Hosting, domain, plus any paid themes or plugins |
WordPress is licensed under the GPLv2 open-source licence, and WordPress.org says it powers over 43% of all sites on the web. That size is why there's a plugin, a tutorial and a developer for nearly every problem.
When does an AI builder make more sense?
- You need a simple site live quickly, such as a launch page or a five-page brochure site.
- You don't want to think about updates, plugins or security patches.
- You're testing an idea and might not keep the site.
- The builder already includes the one feature you need, such as bookings.
The catch is lock-in. Wix, for example, says its sites must run on Wix's servers, so leaving means rebuilding. Read can I move an AI-built website to another host before you commit.
When is WordPress the better choice?
- Your website is central to the business and will grow over years.
- You want to own the site and be free to change host.
- You'll need features like a shop, memberships or multilingual content later.
- You care about fine control over SEO, speed and design.
Our house view is WordPress for most growing businesses, because you own your website and it's backed by a huge developer community. If you go that way, start with how to install WordPress and learn how to update WordPress safely, which is the main upkeep it asks of you. Make sure you're comparing the right thing too, as WordPress.com and WordPress.org are not the same.
Can I get the best of both?
Yes, increasingly. WordPress's official AI plugin adds AI help inside the editor, and page builders such as Elementor can generate full pages from a prompt. You get an AI-assisted first draft on a platform you can take anywhere.
WordPress's built-in export (under Tools > Export) downloads your posts, pages, comments, menus and other content as an XML file, which is one reason moving hosts is routine. If you host with Hosteaze, free migration means we can move an existing WordPress site over for you. For platform-by-platform detail, see Wix vs WordPress.

Frequently asked questions
Does WordPress have AI built in?
Not in the core software as of October 2026, but there's an official AI plugin on WordPress.org. It can suggest titles and excerpts, write image alt text, translate blocks and generate images, once you connect it to an AI provider such as OpenAI, Google or Anthropic.
Is WordPress harder to use than an AI builder?
At the start, yes. You choose a host, a theme and a few plugins, and you need to keep them updated. Once it's set up, editing pages in the block editor is no harder than in most builders.
Can I move from an AI builder to WordPress later?
Usually by rebuilding rather than importing. Copy your text and download your images before you start, and set up redirects from old page addresses to new ones so you keep your search rankings.
