What is the best AI website builder for a small business?

The short answer
There's no single best AI website builder, because they all produce a decent first draft in minutes. The real differences are what happens afterwards, how easily you can edit, add booking or shop features, and whether you can take your site elsewhere. For most small businesses, pick the one whose editor you like and check the exit route first.

Every AI website builder now does the party trick: describe your business, wait a minute, get a website. The first drafts look surprisingly similar. So the useful question isn't which AI is cleverest, it's which platform you'll be happy living on for the next five years.
How do the main AI website builders compare?
As of October 2026, these are the options most UK small businesses will come across.
| Wix | Squarespace | Framer | WordPress with AI tools | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Builds a whole site from a prompt | Yes, with a built-in AI assistant for edits | Yes, through its AI website builder | Yes | Not by itself. Page builders such as Elementor add AI page generation |
| Try before paying | Free start, no card needed | Free trial, no card needed | Free plan | WordPress is free, you pay for hosting |
| Hosting | Included, Wix only | Included, Squarespace only | Included, Framer only | Any host you choose |
| Take the site elsewhere | No, Wix sites must run on Wix's servers | Partly, an XML export of some content | No HTML export | Yes, full export and move |
| Best suited to | Most small businesses wanting lots of built-in tools | Design-led brands, portfolios, simple shops | Designers and startups wanting slick marketing sites | Businesses wanting full ownership and room to grow |
Wix says the content you build belongs to you, but its own help pages explain the site can't be hosted anywhere else. Squarespace's export creates a WordPress-format file containing only some content, such as a single blog page, and many design features don't come with it. Framer states it doesn't offer HTML export for self-hosting. None of that is a reason to avoid them, but it's worth knowing before you invest months of work.
What should I check before choosing one?
- Your must-have features. Online booking, a shop, a members area or a newsletter sign-up. Check the builder does these on the plan you'll pay for.
- The editor. Spend an hour changing things by hand after the AI has finished. That's where you'll spend your time.
- Your domain. Register it separately or make sure it's in your name, so it stays yours whatever happens.
- The exit route. Ask "if I leave in three years, what do I take with me?"
- The full price. Look at the renewal price, not just the first-year offer. Our guide to AI website builder pricing covers the extras.
Which one would we pick?
Our house view is that WordPress is the better long-term home for most businesses, because you own the site outright and can move it to any host. Its official AI plugin can already suggest titles, excerpts and image alt text, and page builders add AI page generation. But it asks more of you, as our AI website builder vs WordPress comparison explains.
If you'd rather not manage updates, an all-in-one builder is a perfectly sensible choice. Hosteaze offers an AI website builder too, and the same advice applies to ours: try it, edit it, and check what you can take with you.
Is an AI builder enough on its own?
For a straightforward brochure site, often yes. For anything with complex bookings, custom integrations or a large product catalogue, you may outgrow it. Frequently asked questions
Are free AI website builders good enough?
For trying ideas, yes. For a business, free tiers typically give you an address on the builder's own domain rather than yours. Framer, for example, needs a paid plan to connect a custom domain. Plan to pay once you go live.
Can I switch AI website builder later?
Usually only by rebuilding. Wix and Framer don't let you export a site to host elsewhere, and Squarespace's export covers only some content. Keep copies of your text and photos so a rebuild is quick.
Does the AI write good copy for my business?
It writes plausible copy, which isn't the same thing. It doesn't know your prices, service area or what makes you different, so expect to rewrite most of it in your own words.
