Can I move an AI-built website to another host?

The short answer
Usually not as a working site. Most AI website builders run your site on their own platform, so you can move your domain and copy your content, but the design and features stay behind. Wix and Framer don't offer export for hosting elsewhere, and Squarespace exports only some content. Sites built with AI tools inside WordPress can move freely.

It's the question people ask a year too late. You built a site in an AI builder, it's going well, and now you want a different platform or host. The answer depends entirely on where the site was built, and for most all-in-one builders it's "you can take your content and your domain, but not the site itself".
What can I take with me from each platform?
| Platform | Move the working site? | What you can export | Domain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wix | No, sites must run on Wix's servers | No site export; copy content by hand | Yours to move if registered in your name |
| Squarespace | No | An XML file of some content, such as pages and one blog, in WordPress format | Yours to move |
| Framer | No HTML export for self-hosting | Copy content by hand | Yours to move |
| WordPress (with AI tools) | Yes, to any host | Everything: files, database, themes and plugins | Yours to move |
Wix explains that, as a software-as-a-service platform, your site relies on its own technology, though the content you build belongs to you. Framer says its published sites depend on its backend services, so they can't be exported as standalone HTML. Squarespace's export is designed for importing into WordPress, and many design features and some content types don't come across.
How do I move off an AI builder?
In practice, you rebuild. Plan it like this:
- Make sure your domain is registered in your name and you can log in to manage it.
- List every page and its address, for example
/services/boiler-repair. - Copy all your text into documents and download all your original images.
- Export anything the platform allows, such as Squarespace's XML file, plus any contact or order lists you can download.
- Build the new site, keeping page addresses the same where possible.
- Set up permanent (301) redirects from any old address that changes to its new equivalent.
- Point your domain at the new site, then check every page, form and redirect.
Google advises keeping redirects in place for as long as possible, generally at least a year. Our guide to redesigning a website without losing SEO covers the details.
How do I avoid getting stuck next time?
- Register your domain separately, or check it's in your name.
- Keep your own copies of text, images and customer lists.
- Before choosing a builder, ask what you can export.
- If ownership matters, build on WordPress, where AI tools work inside a platform you can move anywhere.

Frequently asked questions
Can I keep my domain name if I leave a website builder?
Yes, as long as it's registered in your name. You can point it at a new site or transfer it to another registrar. A registrar may refuse a transfer within 60 days of the domain's first registration.
Will I lose my Google rankings if I rebuild elsewhere?
Not if you're careful. Keep your domain, keep page addresses the same where you can, and set up permanent 301 redirects from any old address to its new equivalent. Google recommends keeping redirects for at least a year.
Can someone copy my AI-built site for me?
Tools and freelancers can recreate the look and content on another platform, but that's a rebuild rather than a transfer. Check you own the text and images being copied, and expect to rebuild forms, bookings and shop features.
