How billing works, step by step
When your invoice is raised, when you are reminded, when a card is charged and when an unpaid website is paused.

This is the whole journey of one renewal, in order. The exact dates for your own websites are on your Billing page, or just ask the billing assistant in the chat.
The timeline
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 14 days before the renewal date | The invoice is created and emailed to the account holder |
| A few days before it is due | If it is still unpaid, a reminder is emailed |
| The renewal date | If automatic renewal is on and a card is saved, the card is charged. If the charge fails, you get a "payment failed" email with a link to pay, and we try again |
| The day after the due date | If it is still unpaid, an overdue notice |
| About a week after the due date | A final notice |
| 14 days after the due date | An unpaid website is paused and shows a "temporarily unavailable" page. Nothing is deleted |
| When you pay | A receipt is emailed and a paused website comes back automatically |
If you pay by card yourself, use the Pay link in the invoice email or the Pay button on the invoice in Billing.
Domains are on a different clock
A domain name renews yearly. Its invoice is created 30 days before it expires, and if automatic renewal is on and a card is saved, the card is charged 7 days before it expires.
What your invoice contains
Each line says what it is for and the period it covers. A hosting renewal shows the website, the plan and the dates it pays for. If a line does not look right, open a support ticket with the invoice number.
