In your browser
Open Files in the control panel. You can browse folders, upload files (drag and drop works), rename and delete. Your website normally lives in the main folder shown when you first open it.
Warning. Deleting a file cannot be undone from the control panel. If you delete something by mistake, ask us to restore your website.
With an SFTP program
SFTP is the secure way to transfer many files. Programs such as FileZilla, Cyberduck and WinSCP all support it.
- Open Files in the control panel (the SFTP details are underneath), or Tools then SFTP access.
- Choose your own SFTP password, or press Or generate one for me. A password you choose needs at least 12 characters, with three of: lowercase letters, UPPERCASE letters, numbers and symbols. It can't contain your website's name, a very common word such as "password", or runs like 1234. A few unrelated words with a number and a dash, like
Violet-Tractor-Lamp-42, works well. You can change it at any time. - In your SFTP program enter:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Protocol | SFTP (not plain FTP) |
| Host | your domain name, for example yourdomain.com |
| Port | 22 |
| Username | shown on the SFTP access page |
| Password | the one you just set |
We don't keep a copy of your password, so we can't tell you what it is. If you forget it, set a new one the same way. Anything connected with the old password will need the new one.
You only see your own website's files. Ordinary FTP is not available because it sends passwords unprotected.
Permissions
If your software says it cannot write to a folder, check the folder is not set to read-only. Folders are normally 755 and files 644.
