Email sending limits

Why there are limits on how much email can be sent, and what to do if you hit one.

Mail providers such as Gmail and Outlook judge every sender by the behaviour of the server they send from. One account sending lots of junk can get everyone's email rejected. To protect your mail, we limit how much each account can send.

Mailboxes

A single email address can send to about 200 recipients an hour and 1,000 a day. Each recipient counts, so one message to 50 people counts as 50. When you reach the limit, further messages wait and are delivered once there is room. Nothing is lost.

Websites

Messages sent by your website (for example from a contact form) have their own hourly and daily limits and a cap on recipients per message. If a website sends far more than normal we pause its email while we check, and we will contact you.

Sending a newsletter?

A mailing list to hundreds of people is better sent through a dedicated service such as Mailchimp or Brevo than from a normal mailbox. If you must send larger batches, ask us and we can raise the limit for one address.
